How many studs for a wall?

Studs are spaced evenly along the wall. The count is wall length divided by spacing (in feet), rounded up, plus one extra for the end — because every wall starts and ends with a stud at the corner. A 20 ft wall at 16 inches on center needs 16 studs. Add extra studs for corners (each corner typically needs a second stud), and for door and window openings (king studs plus jack studs on each side, roughly five studs per opening).

Spacing depends on the wall: 16 inches on center is standard when hanging drywall and holding insulation; 24 inches can be acceptable for some partitions but limits drywall support. Load-bearing walls follow your structural plan — never improvise on framing that carries weight.
